Food Politics and Health

When you think of food I’m sure that the last thing that comes to mind is the politics behind it. What I mean is how so many different for profit companies go out of their way to hide from the people the possible harmful effects of how it can cause our bodies to act in ways that have bad long term effects such as obesity and development of diabetes. As your body fat percentage increases, your body's ability to use insulin the correct way decreases, which in turn increases your risk of type-2 diabetes. Insulin, a hormone produced by your pancreas, helps carry glucose to your cells. In those with type-2 diabetes, the fat, liver and muscle cells do not respond well to insulin, leading to a condition called insulin resistance. With insulin resistance, glucose cannot enter the cells and, instead, builds up in the bloodstream. High levels of glucose in the bloodstream is called hyperglycemia – a condition associated with type-2 diabetes. If type-2 diabetes is not properly managed, it can lead to eye disease and kidney disease.

The point I am to make is that not only do big corporation go out of their way to hide nutritional values and facts from us of what’s in our food but that our economic stance hinders our abilities to get good quality foods into our homes. Per what Mr. Michael Pollan states in his food politics book published in and revised in the early 2000’s. “When it comes to the mass production and consumption of food, strategic decisions are driven by economics—not science, not common sense, and certainly not health.” No wonder most people are more than often confused about what to eat to remain healthy and have a balanced and wholesome meal.

In Conclusion, I just want to stress that dieting is everyone’s responsibility. But, most of all its our civic duty to hold companies responsible for how our food is handled and how its sourced meaning where it comes from I.e. sustainable.
